Day 1
Start your weekend off by getting acquainted with the Fredericksburg area. Stretch your legs with a walk along Main Street downtown, where you can check out the shops and get the lay of the land. The Fredericksburg Visitor Center is a good place to find out more about any activities you might have in mind.
Spend the afternoon exploring the shops and galleries along Main Street, which is lined with charming historic buildings. Hunt for antique treasures at Red Baron Antique Mall or step into one of the many unique souvenir and gift shops like Luckenbach on Main to pick up local art, crafts or clothing.
Stop for dinner at one of the traditional German restaurants along Main Street like Der Lindenbaum where you can find schnitzel and German beers. After dinner, head to Becker Vineyards Tasting Room for a sampling of the area’s fine wines or grab a beer at Fredericksburg Brewing Company, the oldest brewery in the state of Texas.
Day 2
Take a stroll with your morning coffee and wander through Marktplatz, where the farmers market is open in spring and summer, and holiday events take over the square later in the year. Stop into the Pioneer Museum to learn more about the homesteading history of Fredericksburg, or head to the National Museum of Pacific War, which honors the legacy of Admiral Nimitz and the soldiers who fought in the Pacific theater of World War II (and be sure to visit the lovely Japanese Peace Garden on the museum grounds).
Stop for lunch at Cultures Grill and Bar for a casual fusion of the local German and Mexican food heritage before spending the afternoon enjoying the wineries of Hill Country. There are over 50 local vineyards offering wine tastings in the Fredericksburg area and many have beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy fine Texas wines. For a unique experience, head to Das Peach Haus, which offers local produce and wine tastings as well as gourmet cooking classes. There are also a number of breweries and distilleries in the area for those who want something different.
In the evening, stop by Otto’s German Bistro for a farm-to-table dinner, then head out to do some two-stepping at the Luckenbach dance hall or enjoy live music at one of the local venues.
