4 Ways to Greet Fall in Fredericksburg Texas
Fall in Fredericksburg is the busiest time of year and for good reason. As the landscape sheds its summer skin, the town comes together to celebrate a rich German heritage, bountiful autumn harvest, and unmatched natural wonder of Texas Hill Country. Here are the best ways to experience fall and get to know the bustling town of Fredericksburg.
1. Texas Wine Month
There is no better way to spring into fall than with an earthy glass of red, a floral rose, or a crisp white. During Texas Wine Month, your cup will overflow with fun at vineyards and wineries in Texas Hill Country. From October 1st -31st, you can taste and tour over 50 vineyards with the Texas Wine Month Passport. Purchase your passport for $85 if you’re flying solo ($120 for couples) and visit up to four locations a day. Your passport comes with complimentary tastings at each location and a variety of discounts on bottles at select wineries. Fredericksburg itself is home to many of these enchanting vineyards, but be sure to visit the neighboring towns for the full experience. For a comprehensive list of participating vineyards, visit the Texas Wine Trail site and get your passport today.
2. Texas Mesquite Arts Festival
From October 8th-10th, Fredericksburg hosts the Texas Mesquite Arts Festival. This unique gathering is held on Marketplatz in the heart of town and features stunning creations carved by skilled artisan woodworkers. Each handcrafted treasure embraces function and beauty. The pieces are cut from mesquite wood and chiseled to artistic perfection, from tawny dining tables and auburn ashtrays to coffee-colored vases and ochre jewelry boxes, the Mesquite Arts Festival is a sight to behold. Learn more about the artists and their wares here.
3. Oktoberfest
October is a busy time in Fredericksburg, Texas! Start the month of the German way…with Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is the largest festival of the year and features many fun, family-friendly events, including the Haupstrasse Chicken Dance, OkTUBAfest, the family Lederhosen contest, and some good, old-fashioned yodeling. It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without a delicious selection of imported and local beer. Enjoy a weekend of live music, dancing, food, and drink, but don’t wait too long. Event tickets and festival passes sell out fast.
4. Bat Cave
Bruce Wayne isn’t the only bat with places to go. One of the most spectacular things you will see in Fredericksburg, Texas is the daily bat emergence from the Old Tunnel State Park. Mexican free-tailed bats ascend into the sky from their cave every night from May to October. The colony residing in the tunnel emerges from the darkness and travels 10,000 feet up in the air to catch moths and other insects before returning to the safety of the cave. Permits are required to view the bats after 5PM and reservations are limited. Visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife page for information on how to acquire permits and reserve viewings for the Fredericksburg marsupial phenomenon.
